Situated half way between Boston and mainland Portugal, the spectacular Azores rise out of the Atlantic Ocean as a series of volcanic islands. This location has made them a crossroads for travelers, sailing from Europe and Africa to the Americas, as well as a major point of departure for immigrants to North America, with Boston a leading place of settlement. Students will learn about patterns of emigration from and return migration to the islands, and the impact these processes have had on the Azores. We will visit the Museum of Emigration, speak with the US Consulate who oversees immigration to the US, and meet with members of NGOs who work with both emigrants and returnees. We will also sample Azorean culture, unique due to the geography and geology. We will eat “Cozido das Furnas,” a meal cooked for many hours in the hot springs, as well as try the locally made cheeses. The islands are working towards sustainability in farming and tourism, and we will engage in these initiatives through a community service project.

Program Highlights:

* Learn about the long history of immigration from the Azores to the Boston area by meeting with academics, policy makers, and government officials
* Eat "cozido das furnas," a meal cooked underground
* Hike the spectacular islands of the Azores, including Sao Miguel and Pico
* Attend an Azorean street festival
* Visit a tea plantation
