The 12th Annual Dorothy Day Lecture, established by the Class of 1971, is proud to present Jonathan Kuttab, J.D., Executive Director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA), and lecture respondent Dr. Shaul Arieli, Teaching Fellow at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and research fellow at the Truman Institute for Peace, discussing  “New Visions for Enduring Peace Between Palestinians and Israelis”

About the Speaker and Respondent: 

Jonathan Kuttab 

Jonathan Kuttab is a Palestinian and international human rights attorney with extensive experience in negotiating, teaching and advocating for a non-violent solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Jonathan was the head of the Palestinian legal committee during the negotiation of the Cairo Agreement and now directs international non-profit organizations seeking peace in the region. He continues to consult and work as an international human rights lawyer. His presentation is one of peace and non-violence, with a deep understanding of history and human rights which must support a solution to the conflict. His policy vision for advancing a new solution to the conflict articulated in his book Beyond the Two State Solution provides a compassionate and nuanced understanding of the peoples, land and history of the region. His lecture will focus on human rights and the policies and practices that create a pathway to a permanent and just solution to the conflict. 

Jonathan Kuttab is a co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq; co-founder of Nonviolence International; and founding director of Just Peace Advocates Mouvement pour une Paix Juste, a Canadian based international law human rights organization. Jonathan currently is the executive director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA) and lives in Pennsylvania. He serves on the Board of Bethlehem Bible College and is President of the Board of Holy Land Trust. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Virginia Law School and practiced law in New York, before returning home to Palestine.  

Jonathan Kuttab is a frequent writer and contributor for the Balfour Project, a Scotland-based nonprofit which seeks “peace with justice, security and equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis” through education and advocacy. Kuttab has published three books, his articles and interviews have appeared in the Middle East Institute, Arab News, Al Jazeera, and the Electronic Intifada. 

Shaul Arieli 

Shaul Arieli holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Sciences from Haifa University.  He demonstrates deep historical and political knowledge of the land and its peoples and presents a pragmatic proposal for the implementation of the two-state solution. Arieli’s focus is also on establishing a just and permanent peace. He has extensive experience in government service and non-governmental organizations. Formerly he was active in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), an administrator in the West Bank, head of the Israel peace administration, and now active in NGOs promoting a two-state solution that promotes peace and reconciliation in a permanent solution to the conflict. 

A former colonel in the IDF, Shaul was Deputy Military Secretary to the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense (1997-1999). He is active in several organizations working to advance a permanent status agreement with the Palestinians. He is one of the leaders of the Geneva Initiative (https://geneva-accord.org/mission-statement/), having worked as a negotiator for the Geneva Accord. He is a senior researcher at the Economic Cooperation Foundation which develops practical and creative tools to facilitate Israeli-Arab and Israeli-Palestinian cooperation in major social institutions. He ran for election in the Knesset. He is an historian of the conflict; a critical analyst of the geography of the region, producing illustrative maps and commentary; and an author and advocate for a two-state solution providing illustrative and concrete plans for change. He is currently a teaching fellow at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a research fellow at the Truman Institute for Peace. His dissertation research examined the development of Israel's borders in comparison to other conflicts zones in the world. He is considered one of Israel’s leading experts on the demarcation of a future Israeli-Palestinian border and the route of the Separation Barrier.  

Arieli is a prolific author, writer and presenter. He is the author of five books and a frequent opinion contributor to many regional print publications including The Jerusalem Post, The Times of Israel, and Haaretz. He hosts his own YouTube channel and posts his PowerPoint presentations as public education material on his website. 

About the Dorothy Day Lecture Series

The Annual Dorothy Day Lecture Series was launched in 2013 by the Emmanuel College Class of 1971 to honor liberal arts as the foundation and inspiration for meaningful social action. The goal of the lecture series is to encourage ongoing engagement with issues of social justice among students, alumni and the general public. The Dorothy Day Lecture Series features speakers who are role models for contributing to positive social change. The series is named for Dorothy Day, a courageous 20th-century woman of faith who dedicated her life to the struggle for economic and social justice.
