11/04/2021 - “Making Sense of Numbers in the News”
You’ve encountered some numerical information today, I’m sure of it! A news article mentioned a survey and its margin of error, you checked the latest data on the college’s COVID testing dashboard, you watched “Last Week Tonight,” or something… Whatever it was, it’s safe to say we simply can’t avoid dealing with graphs, data, and thinking about numbers. Unfortunately, there’s no “magic formula” for understanding everything we see, but we can practice good habits of mind.
Dr. Brendan Sullivan, Department of Mathematics, will share some of those habits by analyzing real examples from the news and social media. Audience participation will be encouraged! You are also welcome to bring examples you’ve encountered recently for us to discuss.
